Job Overview: Fitter

Measure and layout larger more complex subassemblies typically found at the erection area in shop #5, sterns, rake assembly and rake attachment to barge. Direct and/or guide a tacker/welder in placing tack welds as dictated by the drawing or good assembly practices all in conformance with the drawing. Check for fairness and squareness of the barge subassemblies as they are erected by the use of piano wire, spreader beams, etc., using proper reference points as dictated by the drawing

Starting Pay: $20.00 – $35.00 /hour*

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Measure and layout larger more complex subassemblies typically found at the erection area in shop #5, sterns, rake assembly and rake attachment to barge
  • Direct and/or guide a tacker/welder in placing tack welds as dictated by the drawing or good assembly practices all in conformance with the drawing
  • Check for fairness and squareness of the barge subassemblies as they are erected by the use of piano wire, spreader beams, etc using proper reference points as dictated by the drawing
  • Maintain overall integrity of the dimensional width and length of the barge in conformance with the drawing
  • Overtime is an essential function of this position

 

SKILL FACTORS:

  • Superior blueprint reading skills required
  • Superior math skills required; involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of drawing measurements using whole numbers and fractions
  • Thorough understanding of cumulative stack-up problems and/or dimensional tolerance issues allowing the Fitter I to successfully trouble shoot fit-up problems
  • Once the troubleshooting activity is completed, the accurate use of the cutting torch to complete the fit-up is required
  • Level I Fitter is responsible for the quality of the work performed

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Manufacturing work conditions
  • Exposure to varying temperatures (cold & hot)
  • Exposure to air particulates and some minor amount of smoke
  • Exposure to loud, penetrating noises randomly

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 or more years of experience

Starting Pay: $20.00 – $35.00 /hour based on experience.
